What Is Br_funcs.exe and How To Get Rid Of It

Lenovo computer users with  ThinkVantage Tools will be no stranger to br_funcs.exe – a process that periodically reports high CPU usage and causes computers to work at a painstakingly slow pace.

So, what is this process? What does it do? Why does it report high CPU usage? Can we get rid of it?

Read on to know all you need to know about this process.

The br_funcs.exe process is associated with Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools Enhanced Backup and Restore. The process is utilized when ThinkVantage Tools runs a backup.

By default, every Lenovo computer with ThinkVantage Tools is designed to run this backup process automatically. Most Lenovo computers using ThinkVantage Tools automatically run this backup utility three times a week. When a backup is running, this process consumes all available CPU cycles. In other words, your computer runs at 100% CPU usage and it becomes nearly impossible for you to do any other work while a backup is running. Depending on the amount of data, the back up process may take anywhere between 10-30 minutes.

According to Lenovo, high CPU usage by br_funcs.exe when a backup is running is not unusual.  In fact, makers of Lenovo claim that it is normal for this process to report up to 80% CPU usage when it is backing up your data.

So, if you find this process slowing down your computer, at least you now know the behavior is normal.

What’s the Alternative?

There are a few things you can do to improve the scenario – (1) schedule backups once a week at a time when you are not likely to be using your computer, and (2) prevent Enhanced Backup and Restore from running altogether and use an alternative third-party backup tool.

Using the ThinkVantage Tools interface, you can schedule backup frequency and time according to your preference.

The same interface also allows you to prevent this backup utility from running, in case that is what you want. Here are the steps you need to follow if you want to prevent br_funcs.exe from running altogether.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click All Programs.
  3. Click Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools.
  4. Click Enhanced Backup and Restore (in case a backup is running then cancel it).
  5. Next, click Change schedule, name a backup, delete backups.
  6. Select Never in the Frequency drop-down list.
  7. Click Save Changes.
