Solution to Qlbctrl.exe Error

QLB Controller, or qlbctrl.exe, is associated with HP Quick Launch Buttons. The process allows you to program the quick launch buttons on an HP keyboard. This is an essential process and we recommend that you do not terminate it.

Qlbctrl.exe Startup Information

By default, the process is programmed to run itself everytime you boot Windows.

The process is not known to be CPU intensive. In other words, it does not consume inappropriate amounts of CPU resources.

The file is located in a subfolder of %ProgramFiles%.

Note: %ProgramFiles% is a variable that refers to Program Files folder on your computer. By default, the pat is C:\Program Files


When you shutdown your Windows computer, you receive the following error:

“Qlbctrl.exe is not responding.”


To fix the issue, perform the following tasks in the sequence they appear below:

Task 1 – Uninstall and Reinstall HP QuickLaunch

Use the built-in Add or Remove Programs utility to uninstall QuickLaunch. Next, restart your computer and install QuickLaunch.

Here are the steps to uninstall QuickLaunch on Windows Vista and Windows 7:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel to open its corresponding window.
  3. Double click on Programs and Features.
  4. In the Uninstall or change a program window that opens, locate and right-click QuickLaunch, and then select Uninstall/Reinstall.
  5. Follow the screen instructions to complete the process.

Task 2 – Remove QuickLaunch from your Startup Sequence

To do this, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  4. Click Startup.
  5. Uncheck the box before QuickLaunch.
  6. Click Apply to save your changes, and then click OK.

A dialog box will appear on your screen asking if you want to exit without restarting Windows or restart Windows now. Select either of the two depending on your preference.

Task 3 – Change QuickLaunch Startup Type to Manual

To do this, perform the steps illustrated below:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run to launch its dialog box.
  3. Type services.msc, and then press Enter.
  4. In the right-pane of Service window, locate and double-click QuickLaunch.
  5. Select Manual in the Startup type drop-down menu in the General tab.
  6. Click Apply to save the changes.
  7. Click OK.
