How to Prevent Programs from Loading at Startup

Programs that load at Startup may become a source of delay. If you do not want to experience any computing delays, you may want to prevent some programs from loading at Startup.

This registry tweak for Windows XP is an alternative to MSCONFIG. Bear in mind that this is a registry tweak, therefore modifications to the registry have to be made for the tweak to work. As changes to the registry are irreversible without a backup, you should always create a backup prior to any registry edit. This provides you with a means to restore your registry to the original settings should errors arise.

There two methods available. The first method prevents programs from loading for the current user. The second method prevents programs from loading for all users. Instructions for both methods are listed below.

Prevent Programs from Loading at Startup for the Current User

  1. Click Start and go to Run. Enter regedit. Your registry editor will come up on your screen.
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. This can be found on the left side of the registry editor. Expand this by clicking on the cross on the left.
  3. Now go to Software and expand.
  4. Look for Microsoft. Expand the Microsoft folder.
  5. Locate the Windows folder and expand.
  6. Look for CurrentVersion. After expanding CurrentVersion, go to Run.
  7. Now look at the right side of the registry editor. Look at the programs listed on the right hand pane. Do you see any programs that you don’t want to run at Startup?
  8. Right click on each program that you do not want to load at Startup and Select Delete. Be careful not to delete those programs that you do want to run.
  9. Exit registry and reboot.

Prevent Programs from Loading at Startup for the Local Machine

  1. Click Start and go to Run. Enter regedit. Your registry editor will come up on your screen.
  2. Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This is one of the folders found at the left side of the registry editor. Expand this folder by clicking on the cross also found on the left of the folder.
  3. Next, go to Software. Expand this folder and go to Microsoft.
  4. Expand Microsoft and go to Windows. Once you’ve found Windows, expand the folder.
  5. Go to CurrentVersion and expand. You should now be able to see the Run folder.
  6. Look at the right hand pane of your registry editor. What programs are listed there?
  7. Right click on each program that you do not want to load at Startup and select Delete.
  8. Exit the registry and reboot.

If you see a lot of programs, don’t be surprised. Many people do not know that there are a lot of programs that load without their knowledge.

Remove the programs you don’t want and enjoy a faster computing experience.
