When on Windows XP, accessing My Computer from the Desktop opens up the default view known as the Category View. Files Stored On This Computer forms part of the Category view.
Many XP users do not find the Category View helpful or of much use. The Files Stored On This Computer part of the Category view has even been described as especially useless.
If you would prefer your screen to be filled by items that you can, should, or will use, you may opt to eliminate the Files Stored On This Computer part of the Category view. A registry tweak for Windows XP based computers can eliminate this from the default Category view.
Because this is a registry tweak, you should perform a back-up of your registry before attempting any edits. The back-up allows you to return your registry to the prior settings should any unforeseen issues occur.
To remove Files Stored On This Computer part of the Category view, follow the instructions enumerated below.
1. Click Start and go to Run.  Type in regedit and press OK. A box will pop up.
2. Look at the folders on the left. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
3. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE by clicking on the little cross to the left.
4. Look for the Software folder. Expand this folder until you get to Microsoft.
5. Once inside Microsoft, look for Windows.
6. Inside Windows, look for CurrentVersion. Once you’ve found the folder, go to Explorer.
7. You should be able to find MyComputer under Explorer. Look for NameSpace in the MyComputer folder.
8. If you have found NameSpace, expand the folder to go to DelegateFolders.
9. Expand DelegateFolders. Look for {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. Be very careful to delete the correct sub-key. Long numbers and letters may be confusing.
10. Exit the registry and reboot.
You have now deleted the Files Stored on this Computer part of the Category of My Computer.
