Fixing Error 0xc0000142

The following error message may be displayed and you may hear a “ding” sound when you try to log off from your Windows Vista computer:

AtBroker.exe - Application error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142).
Click OK to terminate the application.

The ding sound with the error implies that a system error has occurred on the system. After a few seconds, the error message and the sound may go away and your system should proceed with the logoff process. This error is likely to occur in instances when you are using programs such as screen magnifier or screen reader, that run on Windows Vista secure desktop.

Cause of the Error

A timing issue between the Winlogon.exe and the Atbroker.exe processes cause this error. When the timing issue occurs, Windows Vista starts Atbroker.exe on a wrong desktop. This prevents Atbroker.exe from running and the error is generated.

Note: In Windows Vista, secure desktop is displayed when you press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys, lock the system or leave it in the logoff state.

Fix Error Code 0x80070241

The following error message may be displayed when you try to install the Windows Vista operating system on your computer:

Windows cannot copy files required for installation. The files may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for the installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Code: 0x80070241

Cause of the Error

The Windows Vista installation DVD comprises the setup files in a highly compressed form. Error code 0x80070241 is generated if one or more of these files on the DVD are corrupt or damaged.

Resolution Method

You can use one of the following methods to resolve the error.

Method 1: Use Original ISO Image to Reburn a New Windows Vista Setup DVD

In case the original ISO image of the Windows Vista installation is available to you, it is recommended that you try to use this copy to burn a new Windows Vista setup DVD. This time, try to burn the DVD at a lower burn speed.

Method 2: Obtain a New Setup DVD

Contact Microsoft or your local vendor and get another original copy of the Windows Vista installation DVD. Now, use this DVD to perform the Windows Vista setup on the system.
