Resolve Windows Error Code 80240016

When youtry to install new updates on a Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows 2003 server computer, you may receive error code 80240016 when new updates are not installed.

To resolve Windows error code 80240016, perform the following tasks:

  • Download and run the free Malicious Software Removal Tool from Microsoft.
  • Ensure that services necessary to download and install updates are properly configured and running.

Before, you perform the above two tasks, if you use Windows XP or Vista computer, make sure the Automatic Updates feature is enabled.

Task 1 – Download and run the Malicious Software Removal Tool

Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) is free software from Microsoft for Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows server 2003 computers that prevents and removes specific malicious programs, such as Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. MSRT is available for download for both 32-bit and 64-bit computers.

After you run MSRT on your computer; it is recommended that you also run a malware scan using the protective software installed on your computer. Next, proceed to the next task.

Task 2 – Check if necessary services are properly configured and running

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 computer, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type services.msc and then press Enter.
  3. In the right-pane of the Services window, locate and double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service to open its properties dialog box.
  4. Select Manual in the Startup type drop-down list, under the General tab, and then click Apply.
  5. Next, click the Log on tab and ensure that the service is enabled for each Hardware Profile present.
  6. Go back to the General tab.
  7. In the Services status section, click the Start button, and then click OK.
  8. Next in the right-pane of the Services window, double-click Event Log service.
  9. Set the Startup type as Automatic and then click OK.
  10. Locate and double-click Automatic Updates service.
  11. Open the General tab, set the Startup type as Automatic and then click OK.
  12. Click the File menu of the Services Window, click Exit to close Services Window, and then try to install new updates.

For Windows Vista, perform the following steps to ensure necessary services are configured and running:

  1. Select Start, type services.msc in the Start Search text area, and click Services in the program list.
  2. Next, double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service to open its properties dialog box.
  3. In the Startup drop-down list, select Manual and then click the Apply button.
  4. Click the Log On tab and ensure that the service is enabled for all the Hardware Profile listed.
  5. Next, click the General tab, click the Start button, and then click OK.
  6. Next, locate and double-click Windows Event Log service.
  7. Select Automatic in the Startup type drop-down list, and click OK.
  8. Locate and double-click Windows Update service.
  9. Set the Startup type as Automatic and then click OK.
  10. Locate and double-click Software Licensing service.
  11. Set the Startup type as Automatic and click OK.
  12. Click the File menu, click Exit to close Services Window, and then try to install the new updates.
